This years campaign 'One billion rising' warns about violence against the most marginalized groups of women: refugees, women living with dissabilities, unemployed women and ethnical minorities. Since it started in 2013 this campaign mobilized, engaged, awakened and joined people worldwide, in more than 200 countries to end violence against women. Violence has been made a global human issue and we are called to awareness of the continuous violating of human rights: working, ethnical, sexual, reproductive, gender, racial and so on.
In Croatia, the campaign was coordinated in more than 10 cities by the Center for women studies and many other NGOs among whom are Centre for Peace Studies and the Initiative Welcome Refugees! The face for this Initiative was our activist Rima Šemsidini, born in Libia, who is also a part of our 'Taste of Home' team. Rima is highly sensitized about the issues of human dignity and human rights and she never misses the chance to engage in helping refugees who transit Croatia in their escape from war and violence.
Welcome Refugees! accents the question:
When will Europe offer women shelters, safe from violence and exploatation?
First women escape the war violence in their countries, then during their exhausting and life threatening trip, even in European teritory, they face lacking and inadequate conditions regarding their needs. Women refugees are more likely to become victims of human trafficking, smuggling, criminal actions, sexual and gender violence and separation with the family.
